History

The Natonal Museum of Palazzo Mansi is located in one of the richest palace in the city, it was built between the 16th and 17th century. The Mansi family bought the building in 1616 and, between 1687 and 1692, turned it into a palace of representation: the outside was austere, on the other hands the inside was articulated and pompous, as the contemporary baroque taste. The Italian State bought it in 1965, at that moment the building had no more the originals furnitures, that were losted and sold in antique markets during the last century, but it already retained the splendid noble floor, that is enriched by frescoes and decorated by precious tapestries.
Palazzo Mansi was restored between 1965 and 1976, in 1977 it was adapted as museum and setted up as National Art Gallery that has art pieces from the Medici’s Collection and Granduca’s Collection. During the 80s the facilities and Museum services were completed and also the restoration of the Palace was completed. The lost furnitures was scattered with others belong from noble houses in the city, the art gallery has been enriched by acquisitions from private collections. The rooms on the ground floor are now devoted to temporary exhibitions, while at the second floor there are paintings by painter from Lucca from the 19th century.
